Here’s 5 Odd Facts About Me to Distract You From Work

I’m a freelance copywriter and I thought I’d help you procrastinate for four minutes, so here’s some odd facts about me.

That’s right, we’re skipping the small talk and sharing a bit of behind-the-screen straight away.

Be prepared.

Fact 1: I have a piece of volcanic rock from Réunion Island.

It’s a strange object to have on your windowsill, but it’s pretty good for adding an explorer vibe.

I took it from Réunion Island myself. Réunion Island is in the Indian Ocean, not far from Madagascar. It’s owned by the French and that’s the main language, so I was glad I focused in my A-Level or I would have felt quite at sea.

A friendly local was taking us out for a road trip and we stopped right at the bottom of the crumbly, black slopes of the volcano that forms the island. We looked up and the volcano’s head was mysteriously hidden by low cloud, but the dried volcanic rock that had been vomited up not too long ago was all around us; it was right next to the road. So, my sister and I took a small piece each.

It has to be the coolest souvenir I’ve got.

Fact 2: I’ve never seen Star Wars.

Most times when I say this to people, they look at me as if I’ve never seen the sun.

So, why haven’t I seen it?

Sci-fi has never been my cup of tea in movies. There’s something about it that I struggle to relate to, no matter how good the plot or the characters are.

Even watching Wall-E felt a bit too…out of my world. I think there’s something about space creatures, perhaps, that I don’t really care about, if I’m honest.

I love fantasy, weird and wonderful creatures, and anything that takes a bit of imagination. But for some reason I just can’t get excited about Darth Vader.

Fact 3: I remember number plates, and can see resemblances between cars and people I know

Yep. I know all of our family’s current and previous number plates that we’ve ever had. I like to remember the last three letters of other people’s number plates too, if we know them.

It’s slightly weird, but car brand, make and number plates are interesting for me when I’m on a road trip, so I can stare out of the window for hours.

When I was a kid, I could see how people’s faces looked just like the back of some cars. For example I know someone who looks like a Toyota Corolla Hatchback (1997-2000 edition).

TMI?

Fact 4: I’ve been to Madagascar.

Actually, it was the same trip that I got the volcanic rock from Réunion Island , but we went to Madagascar first.

So, is it just like the film?

Kind of. We stayed on a beach camp that had a white sandy beach and the rainforest came right onto the beach, but there was a lot of poverty in the village nearby, and the people were polluting the environment with their waste.

We didn’t see ring-tailed lemurs where we were, as they were on the mainland. But we saw lemurs that slightly resembled Maurice.

If you ever go, be prepared for a lot of poverty and mosquitoes, but they have an incredibly beautiful environment. Don’t miss out on Zebu meat, coconut rice and a trip to Nosy Iranja.

Fact 5: I once met Prince Edward.

Ok, we didn’t shake hands, but he was greeting the group of people I was standing with.

Having completed the Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, my sister and I went to an awards ceremony in St James’ Palace in Westminster.

He came into the room to say hello and ask a few questions.

I was standing with about 10 other people, so that’s close enough. I didn’t speak up, though. It was a tongue-tied moment.
